Kraft Paperboard.
Natural character. Considered performance.
Kraft paperboard is valued for its warm appearance, tear resistance and suitability for selected bags, sleeves, wraps and cartons. Brown unbleached, white and dyed variants have different printing and converting characteristics.

MATERIAL REFERENCE / NOT A CERTIFIED SAMPLEWhat to look for.
The material grade, manufacturing process and finishing need to be reviewed together. Ask for a manufacturer's specification sheet, and request samples when strength, appearance or compliance is critical.
Natural brown kraft
Unbleached fibre appearance; printing colour is influenced by the brown surface.
White kraft
Whitened stock may give clearer colour reproduction; confirm grade and properties.
Coloured kraft
Dyed or tinted substrates can reduce ink coverage where the colour suits the design.
A closer look at kraft.
Higher gsm frequently corresponds to heavier stock within a comparable grade, but it does not convert directly into a fixed thickness. Point (pt), micron (µm) and gram-per-square-metre values describe different properties; conversions vary with density and furnish.
| Trade designation | Reference gsm | Reference calliper | Typical discussion |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 pt | 210 | 220 µm | Retail paper bags |
| 14 pt | 250 | 250 µm | Food takeaway carton |
| 16 pt | 300 | 320 µm | Heavy paper bags |
| 18 pt | 350 | 360 µm | Folding cartons |
| 24 pt | 420 | 440 µm | Heavier duty cartons |
| 28 pt | 500 | 500 µm | Reinforced cartons |
These are figures provided in the source example, not universal conversions or product specifications. Some listed pt and micron figures are not mathematically equivalent. Obtain measured thickness, tolerance and tested strength from the supplier.
Physical and print performance
Inspect for creases, holes, dust, formation, surface smoothness and corner quality. Also review absorption, colour, moisture response and ink hold-out. The best stock depends on the print finish and the purpose of the box, not simply the highest weight.
